Deranged is a song by Coheed and Cambria, which was written and recorded for the video game companion album Batman: Arkham City - The Album. The song is not included on any other albums or compilations, and the band only performed it live during their Spring 2012 Tour.
Concept[]
Existing outside of The Amory Wars storyline, Deranged instead focuses on the relationship between the Batman and Joker characters from the Batman franchise. Regarding his approach to writing the song, Claudio Sanchez explained in an interview with Game Informer "I write in a very conceptual format with the stories that surround Coheed and Cambria, but Batman has a much larger, defined history and rules that go along with it. My goal was to find universal themes from Batman’s existing history to help give the lyrics legs and dimension so that the song could live within that world."
"It was about that dynamic between him and The Joker, because at the end of the day, he's at the top of Batman's list." Sanchez explained in an interview with Kerrang!. "For me, it was like, 'Okay, what if that character were to be lost indefinitely? How would the absence of that character affect Batman?' So, basically it's coming from The Joker's perspective as to who's going to be the next at the top of your list? No-one, no-one can take my place there, so without me, you're nothing."
Production[]
Coheed and Cambria were one of twelve artists invited to pen songs for the album, which was meant to compliment the game and draw inspiration from the Batman universe. Being a fan and having significant knowledge and understanding of Batman comics, Claudio explained to Kerrang! his excitement to contribute to the project:
"Our manager called me in and asked me if I was interested in this game called Arkham City. One of my favorite games of the year prior was Arkham Asylum. I'm a big fan. So I got home and I started working on the track right away - guitars, vocals, I even put drums on it. I even took pre-existing pieces from trailers that were already out and started to cut my own trailer to it so that the music fit visually with all the stuff that I'd seen. I wanted it to be as great as it could possibly be."
